Star Wars Saturday: Are Star Wars Characters Interesting?

Video

Here’s a post by Hannah Givens from January of 2014. Are Star Wars Characters Interesting? It stands out in my mind as one of the best posts I read during my first few months of blogging, and since most of you probably didn’t see it the first time around, you should give it a look. And here’s a nice Star Wars-themed video I found to go along with it.

The post touched off a conversation on Facebook that spilled back onto the comment thread and possibly onto twitter as well. (Given that this was 18 months ago, details are a little fuzzy.)

If I recall correctly, this conversation marks the point at which I started keeping up with Natacha Guyot and Rose Fischer — both of which are now friends and have contributed mightily to the blog in the last year. Talk about a stroke of good fortune.

Anyway, it’s a fabulous post. Give it a look!

The Ultimate Roundup of Blogging A to Z in April Theme Reveals

Video

First: Thanks, Chouett.com, for the awesome interview, and for featuring Sourcerer this week. It was a LOT of fun, and you made it oh so easy for me.

Some of our contributors are doing the A to Z Challenge at their own blogs, and I promised to toss their theme reveals into a roundup today. I also have friends who aren’t contributors here who help me mightily week-in and week out. If I had a couple of hours to really think and gather up links, I could probably round up 60 or 70 theme reveals for you.

And I haven’t even actually hit the list yet on account of I’ve been answering threads and loading posts all night. Since I don’t have the time to make a huge list, here’s a list that includes four categories of blogs.

  • Sourcerer contributors.
  • Feminist Friday hosts who are doing A to Z.
  • Bloggers I (or in one case, a friend) started following to during last year’s challenge and they’re still commenting on our threads.
  • One’s here because we met through a blogger I started talking to during April last year, and we talk OFTEN.

Just to make things more interesting, I’ve alphabetized the list. That way, if  you are just joining us and you don’t know who my sister is or which one of these blogs is the first one I linked to, they all have an equal chance of grabbing your attention because you have nothing to go on but the blog title.

As always with a list of this magnitude, if you belong on it and I’ve left you out, that is an oversight and if you point it out to me, I’ll apologize and add you.

Weekend Music: Everybody Wants to Rule the World (and announcements)

Video

I know I’ve shared this here before, but I’m playing the world domination thing for laughs this week, and I’ve heard lots of people like the Hunger Games 😉
Things you need to know:
  • I am on vacation next week with the family. I’ll be keeping tabs, but only around if something comes up or someone really needs to chat, and only responding in the evenings. Contributors’ posts will go as normal, and we may even have a surprise thrown into the mix.
  • I’ve done a little mini promotion for Suze81’s #SundayBlogShare this week. If you plan to share links on Sunday, you need to give Suzie’s post a read. I’m using a couple of Follow Fridays today to give people an easy way to spread the word. If you’d like to join in, I have a post for you at Just Gene’O, and if it’s not your thing, no worries.
  • I’ve got drafts piled up around my ears, but nothing that can’t wait and nothing that won’t be much improved if I work on them a little more. My Saturday Coffee post at Just Gene’O will be my last personal post until I get back unless something comes up that can’t wait.
  • Photoblogging is not going away. I’m just a little short on time to do the loading-and-publishing part of the blogging right now. If you’re following for the photos, stick with us. They’ll be back.
Have a great weekend, all!

I’m On Top Of The World! – Imagine Dragons

Last week I wrote about Lorde, one of the sudden, big hits of recent years. She’s so young that some of the question is, how genuine is she, how much will she maintain who she is now into the future? She sings so much of being small, but has become so big that you have to wonder what the future holds for her.

Night VisionsThe discussion, about how genuine she is, and if it will last, got me thinking of a different band – another recent rise to fame. A band whose name and first full album I keep seeing listed as a top-selling album – 2 years after its release. The album is Night Visions, and the band is Imagine Dragons.

My wife Holly and I were fortunate enough to see Imagine Dragons in concert last year. And by fortunate, I mean that we planned far in advance, got the tickets, and flew many thousands of miles to see them. And what we saw was a band that seemed truly, humbly pleased with their fame, who seemed overwhelmed with it all.

Waiting on this for a while now… Paying my dues to the dirt

Continued SilenceA quick scan of the Wikipedia page about the band shows that some of it was luck that they hit it big, filling in for someone else (Train) at a large concert. We started following them with their early 2012 EP, Continued Silence. And then Night Visions came out, and has been hanging out on iTunes, at least, as one of the top selling Alternative albums ever since, whenever I’m looking for new music.

A lot of their music has been coming out, bit by bit, on EPs, and after the album even, on soundtracks and one at a time. Part of their success has been in the ability for people to get their hands on their music digitally, rather than only through traditional albums.

That also says to me that they’ve been making music for a while, have been putting it together bit by bit, have been trying to figure out what people might like, and what they like to play. As the lyrics say – “been dreamin’ of this since a child.”

And now, they’re on top of the world.
