Blogging A to Z Day 3: Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen is my favorite singer/songwriter, and he is much more that that. He’s a poet, a lover, a realist, a critic, a dreamer, and a prophet. Above all, he is a teller of stories and a survivor. He was born in 1934 and released his first album in 1967. He’s still recording. How many musicians can say that?

He grew up Jewish in Montreal after WW2. He tried to be a writer and was disappointed by the results, so he took up folk music. It worked. I’ve posted more of him on this blog than I’ve shared of any other artist. The music crowd loves him as much as I do, and you can find more of his videos in his category archive on the Playlist.

This performance is the best one I’ve found on the Internet so far for demonstrating the beauty and significance of Leonard Cohen. It’s the telling of the story at the beginning that does it for me. If this man had found his success writing novels instead of singing songs, he’d have won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the ’90s.

Eleven months out of the year, I run a Weekend Music post here on Friday on Saturday. I write a paragraph about the video, then update the peeps on blog-happenings. That doesn’t fit into the A to Z scheme, but we cannot do without our weekend music. It’s a tradition at this point. So I’m posting music on Sundays in this month, along with an open thread you can use to share links and meet other A to Z bloggers.

Follow this blog, or bookmark the front page. And after you do your A to Z visits on Sunday, stop by and share a link.

  • Share your own best post from the week;
  • or share your best find from the A to Z list;
  • or both, but let me know if you include more than one link in a single comment because comments with more than one link go to the spam folder, and I’ll need to retrieve it;
  • or just chatter on the thread about your A to Z experience and I’ll answer the comments.

Best of luck with the challenge!

  1. Great idea Gene’O to collect our best finds from A-to-Z. I have so many, it’s hard to choose one that is “best.” I like Leonard’s story telling style. Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to check out more of his work. I think we all have a story to share, sometimes the trick is finding the right medium and the right audience.

    • Yes, that is true! Another of my favorites from him is a song called “Famous Blue Raincoat.” I’m sure I’ve posted it here someplace, but it is easy to find on YouTube with a search.

    • A roundup is a good idea and I may do a few at my blog, but I decided If we were going to post on Sunday here, the posts needed to be something I could put together beforehand, because I’m juggling all the A to Z stuff and also still doing the coffee linkup on Saturdays.

  2. My Reiki Master introduced me to Cohen in the mid-90s… I love his music and his voice. I love that he can still be heard in pop culture like on Criminal Minds… says a lot about the legend he has become.

    • Thanks! The image is a free wallpaper I stumbledupon. The tagline took a while to evolve. I came up with it in the fall when I did a redesign here. It’s inspired by a friends’s blog – I’ll Make it Myself. She uses “Food with a heaping spoonful of gender and geekery.”

  3. I love him! I listened to his music a lot growing up. I agree he would have been a good writer, but I’m glad he isn’t. I love his voice.

  4. So I have to shyly admit, I don’t know him and have not actually listened to him despite your many, many sharings… I will have to correct this situation!

    Consider this my “official” stopoff at Sourcerer, as well 🙂 92!

  5. Leonard Cohen is my all time favourite. I have all his music and have seen him four times. His concerts are over 3 hours long – not bad for a guy in his 70s (now 80)! This week we are going to see Sharon Robinson, his long-time backing singer and songwriting collaborator. Can’t wait!

  6. YAAAAAAS! Leonard Cohen! My favorite song of his has to be “Joan of Arc”. Such a powerful song, with the personification the fire. He’s an amazing songwriter. 🙂

  7. So had to stop by on two points here. 1st: Leonard Cohen. Yay. 2nd: Chelsea Hotel. There is a song by same name by a folk singer called Dan Bern that I love. Discovered about 2003ish. And so I had this moment of “OMG! Is this really a Leonard Cohen song?” Answer? No. Very different. But now wondering if it’s alluding in some way to the Cohen one? Maybe just folk coincidence? Dan Bern song here if you are curious: https://youtu.be/LayHs1cFTi0 I’ve loved it from the moment I first heard it.

    • Could be a Cohen allusion. Also, could just be about the Chelsea Hotel for other reasons, because it is a infamous dwelling for creative folks to dwell in NYC. I am sure someone famous OD’d there. I’ll surely give it a listen.
