A Brief Bit of Wankery: StumbleUpon

stumbleuponI’m not doing a preview today because I am hard at it loading drafts and writing. Let’s do this instead. Part Time Monster’s latest Top Ten Tuesday has been viewed 820 times since Diana published it.  Just under 600 of those views have come since Thursday and came from StumbleUpon.

Yesterday was Part Time Monster’s best day ever. Previous best day: Friday. Because of StumbleUpon. This is not the first time I’ve seen this kind of traffic from StumbleUpon. If you open an incognito window and google “Is Batman Marvel,” you will find a post from this very blog in the top five (maybe in the top three) and it’s StumbleUpon that put it there.

To whomever is periodically stumbling our posts: Thanks! I’ve seen a few referrals here and there at all three of our blogs over the past few weeks, so I know someone is doing it. I appreciate you keeping up with our blogs and sharing things you like very much. And I appreciate the shares that bring four views just as much as the ones that bring 400.

For those of you who have joined us since I cut back on the social media blogging on Sundays here, this is my basic scheme.worlddomination

  • Keep up with as many blogs as I can, make friends, and connect with them on all the networks we have in common.
  • Figure out how to build an effective presence on networks other than WordPress and use those other networks to find readers for our blogs.
  • Diana and I more or less have the social media divided up between us and we’re looking to build one strong account on as many networks as possible.
  • In the beginning, I played around with nine or ten different networks (very time-consuming), figured out which ones were best for the sort of blogging we do, prioritized them, and started focusing on the ones that looked like the best bets.
  • I spent most of last year focusing on Twitter, and our Twitter accounts have been very valuable for meeting people and building recognition in the blogosphere.
  • In November I declared the Twitter good enough to serve and decided to go hard at Facebook this year.
  • The Facebook is coming along nicely, and if things keep going well for us there, I’ll be ready to call it serviceable for blogging purposes by summer, check in on Fridays and Sundays, and do likes and shares from my phone the rest of the week.

Unless I see a couple of thousand hits in a very short amount of time from either Reddit or Tumblr over the next few months to change my mind, StumbleUpon has to be next. In fact, I’ve already said as much.

I’m not ready to jump back in there just yet, because April is coming. But soon. Here is why. After the Google, the WordPress reader, Twitter, and Facebook, it’s the next top source of referrals, and it’s the only one I’ve seen that brings the traffic in huge spikes.

So, as I do periodically, I am inviting anyone who has useful presence there or knows StumbleUpon tricks to chime in here. Figuring out a network through a combination of research and trial-and-error is difficult and time-consuming. I’d love it of someone who’s already figured out StumbleUpon and written about it would share their posts with me.

And I’ll add that every big traffic spike I’ve personally seen from StumbleUpon had these two things in common:

  1. Was likely Stumbled either to the Books or Comics tags.
  2. Included either one piece of can’t-miss art that displayed well when it was Stumbled, or a short, too-good-to-resist video.

Have a great week, and don’t forget about #SundayBlogShare!

  1. Noooooo! Not more social media channels…oh my poor middle-aged brain can’t keep up with it all. I think I’ll go back to sitting in a cave and clanging rocks together 🙂

    • Ha! Hopefully this is the last one I’ll need. Someone just told me they’ve seen as many as 20,000 page views on a single post from StumbleUpon, is why it is so attractive to me.

  2. So if this post gets you 400 views from stuble upon it was me. 😛
I’ve not really figured SU out yet though. I just hit share and go. What i do know is that Stumle upon, Digg & Delicous work on pretty much the same principal, there more upvotes/likes/diggs and shares a post gets the higher it is ranked and will thus be seen by more people. 🙂

I’m doing a post on Reddit this week, since I’ve been able to figure that one out easier. There it is all about what sub-reddit you post your link to and what title you give it. finding the right sub reddit and title is a bit time consuming, and reddit it self is time consuming because you can’t just dump your links there and go. Then they think you are a troll / spammer and vote you off. I did an experiment with Reddit last year in December with several other bloggers and my own posts. Some have seen their numbers double. Heck even I had like 200 views in like a span of two hours. But then I also got hate mail, cause apparently I was “click baiting”… so

But Reddit is definatly worth the time figuring out, and you can get the hang of it within a few short trial and erros. Watch my space for details. 🙂

    • I will do. Reddit has been the other candidate, but from what I’ve read, it would require about as much time as Facebook to get it to work without getting pegged as a link-spammer.

At least with SU, as long as you’re Stumbling plenty of things from sites you’re not affiliated with, it’s ok to mix your own in.

I figure what I will do at some point, since I know so many writers, book bloggers, etc., is set up a personal account there, ditch the Sourcerer account, and start stumbling three or four posts a day for friends with the mobile app when I do the morning Facebook sharing and retweeting.

Also, I’ve not seen this kind of traffic from Reddit even once, at at least I am kinda-sorta-familiar with how to stumble things and what sort of stuff hits. So it kind of makes sense (for me) to go with SU.

      • Well then, count me as your stumble Upon matie, ahoi. I just hit stumle upon now and then when I remember it. As with all social neteworks I have learned that sharing not only just your stuff but other peoples stuff is the golden rule. 🙂 Seems they all have something in common after all. 🙂

  3. I’m up there with Norm, clanging rocks together … that didn’t come out quite as I meant it to! 😀 … as far a social media goes, and I’m suitably impressed by peeps who .. might as well dig myself in deeper … clang electrons together.

On to other news, is anyone going to recap Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? (or have I missed the posts in my fevered state?)… ‘cos I’ve watched the first two episodes and they’re EMEGHERD-worthy! I think Agent Carter upped the ante and someone was paying attention.

    • I don’t think that’s getting done, because @dbcox is our go-to blogger for that stuff, and we’ve got a LOT of irons in the fire right now. But. Both Agent Carter and David’s post during the break on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. did so well that I’ve got some AoS blogging on the agenda eventually. Might be next season before we can realistically pick it up, though.

        • Indeed! We do what we can do. I am just looking at your blog. Was going to leave this on your about page, but comments are closed, and it does not seem appropriate to say on your Nimoy thread. Two things:

          1. You are one of the best commenters in the whole multiverse, and

          2. I am also saying Bon Voyage to Terry Pratchett. I may even give him a post at some point, and typically I do not give posts to famous people, even the ones I admire.

It is shaping up to be a hard spring for some geeks.
