Show me yours!

by Jeremy Defatta

Good day, everyone! I thought a little game of “show me yours” might be a nice (and fun) aside at this point in the Batman column. Below is an image of a sizable portion of my Batman collection (please excuse the poor quality).

collection

This is most of my Batman trade paperbacks and hardcovers, as well as my Arkham games, the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, and the Nolan trilogy. There are still a few pieces boxed up somewhere that I couldn’t include here, which explains their absence. I could never hope to include an image of every single issue of Batman and his various other comics series that I own, so I didn’t worry too much with those.

I wanted to provide a mixture of media here in order to state a point I honestly believe and have had arguments with fellow fans about. I know that a lot of people have problems with Nolan’s films as a whole (I do, too, honestly), but I feel there is room on the shelf for Nolan’s vision. Just in this one image I’ve provided we will find dozens of different takes on Batman from many wonderful (and not so wonderful) writers.

The thing is, Batman does not belong to any one person (and I’m not arguing copyrights here, so stand down on that one); he is a mythical figure who is constantly reinterpreted and reinvented. Everyone has a personal Batman that is his or her definitive version, and that’s how it should be. There is room on my shelf for everyone’s interpretation of the character, and I look forward to expanding my collection even further down the road.

That being said, what is your definitive Batman? Who wrote him? Do you experience him through non-print media? It’s pretty amazing to me how ubiquitous Batman has become, and I hope that never changes. What do you think of my collection? Feel free to share images or descriptions of your own.

My comic picks for this week:

Batman Beyond Universe #8

Daredevil #1

Thor: God of Thunder #20

New Avengers #15

Witcher #1

Thanks for reading! I’ll be back next week with another character rundown. Don’t forget to support your local comic shops. Tweet me @quaintjeremy.

  2. Good article. I kind of want to argue in favor of a universal Batman who sees the ill deeds of all criminals and condemns them to Bathell. But I also like the personal Batman in our hearts, who teaches us the true meaning of justice.

  4. Haha. It’s actually funny, now that I think about it. I grew up on Batman. And when I say that, I mean that I grew up on this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103359/

So my version, as far as I can remember, was rather squeaky clean. But I tend to think that Batman is kind of lame, as it makes him seem like he’s just Superman dressed in black.

That said, I need to read the old comics..or the new ones…now that I am done with comps, maybe I can.
